Every year, movie lovers across the country pause to celebrate something Netflix can't replicate: the experience of watching a great film together, in the dark, on a big screen, with strangers who become a community for two hours. That's the spirit behind Art House Theater Day, a nationwide celebration now in its seventh year, and this July 30th, Fort Lauderdale's own Savor Cinema is joining more than 130 independent theaters across North America to mark the occasion.

What Is Art House Theater Day?

Art House Theater Day (AHTD) is an annual program of Art House Convergence, a coalition of independent and mission-driven cinemas dedicated to keeping the theatrical experience alive. The day exists to celebrate everything art house theaters bring to their communities — bold, independent storytelling that entertains, challenges, and connects people in a way a streaming queue never quite manages.

It's not hard to see why the cause resonates. Independent cinemas consistently show up in national surveys as genuine cultural hubs — places locals point to when asked what makes their neighborhood feel like a community. For a city like Fort Lauderdale, with a thriving arts scene, that description fits Savor Cinema perfectly.

Savor Cinema: FLIFF's Home Base

Tucked inside a former 1940s Methodist church in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Savor Cinema is the year-round venue of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF). It's where Broward County goes for the films the big multiplexes skip — international dramas, festival darlings, documentaries, and the kind of small, personal stories that don't always get a wide release but deserve to be seen on a real screen.

This Art House Theater Day, Savor Cinema is leaning into that mission with two screenings that couldn't be a more fitting tribute to independent cinema itself.

What's Playing on July 30th

Tickets are $8 each, or FREE for FLIFF Members.

Once Upon a Time in a Cinema

Ireland | Drama, Comedy — 5:30pm

Fittingly, this year's Art House Theater Day slate kicks off with a movie about a movie theater. Set over one chaotic Friday night, this heartfelt Irish comedy-drama follows a struggling small-town cinema owner as disaster after disaster threatens to derail a packed screening — only for the chaos to bring his community together in the process. It's a genuine love letter to the theatrical experience, which makes it the perfect opening film for a day built to celebrate exactly that.

Sugar Island

Dominican Republic | Drama | Spanish and Haitian Creole with English Subtitles — 8:00pm

The evening continues with a striking coming-of-age story from the Dominican Republic. When a 14-year-old Dominican-Haitian girl becomes pregnant, she's sent on a journey of self-discovery that confronts family expectations, social injustice, and the weight of her ancestors' legacy. Blending gritty realism with magical-realist touches, Sugar Island is a moving, visually rich film about identity, resilience, and hope — precisely the kind of film that rarely finds its way to a mainstream screen, and exactly why theaters like Savor Cinema matter.

Why It's Worth Showing Up

Streaming has made watching movies easier than ever, but it's also made the shared part of moviegoing rarer. Art House Theater Day is a reminder that there's something irreplaceable about sitting in a dark room with your neighbors, reacting to the same twist at the same moment, and walking out afterward still talking about what you just saw.

Savor Cinema's lineup this year doesn't just check the box on that idea — it embodies it. One film is literally about why cinemas matter. The other is the kind of story you'd never stumble across on a streaming homepage, but that stays with you long after the credits roll.

When: Thursday, July 30th Where: Savor Cinema, Fort Lauderdale Tickets: $8 per film, free for FLIFF Members

Whether you catch one film or make a night of both, celebrating Art House Theater Day at Savor Cinema is a small way to support the kind of cinema culture Fort Lauderdale would be worse off without.
