A New Kind of Creative Gathering in Broward

On May 9, Broward County will host something that feels less like a traditional art show and more like a moment.

Artful Minds, presented by NAMI Broward (National Alliance On Mental Illness), brings together artists, creatives, and community members through an experience rooted in expression, vulnerability, and connection. At a time when conversations around mental health are becoming more visible but still deeply needed, this event creates space not just to observe art, but to understand what’s behind it.

This is about the stories, the lived experiences, and the moments that shape the work.

And more importantly, it’s about creating an environment where people feel seen in the process.

Where Creativity and Mental Health Intersect

What NAMI Broward is building through Artful Minds reflects a broader shift happening across South Florida.

Creativity is no longer just something to consume. It’s something people are turning to as a tool for reflection, healing, and connection.

Through initiatives like 10 Days of Connection, NAMI has been actively creating intentional spaces for real conversations around mental health. These are not surface-level moments. They are designed for honesty, presence, and community.

Artful Minds extends that same philosophy into the creative space.

Because art, at its core, has always been one of the most honest forms of expression we have.

A Familiar Face, A Deeper Story

Among the featured artists is someone whose journey brings a powerful dimension to the event.

Former NFL player Brian Poli-Dixon, now based in South Florida, will be showcasing his work. While his background may initially stand out, his presence in this space makes complete sense once you understand the path that brought him here.

Brian is also someone we’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with in the past, including having him speak at CreativeZen Talks, our monthly breakfast lecture series built as a mini TED-style experience centered on creativity, growth, and perspective.

Listen to his CreativeZen Talk here:

His story has always been rooted in something deeper than titles or career paths. And his work reflects that.

“I Didn’t Choose Art. Art Chose Me.”

For Brian, art is not a pivot. It is a constant.

“It started when I was about 5 years old and has never left me. I didn’t choose art. Art simply chose me. It’s not something I have ever had to ask myself to do. It’s something I just do, have always done and will always do.”

That instinctive relationship with creativity shows up in how he sees the world.

“I couldn’t look at a photo without seeing art, nor go anywhere without looking at everything as a series of pictures.”

Before the paintbrush, there is observation. Before the canvas, there is story.

His background in photography plays a critical role in this process.

“I have thousands upon thousands of pictures downloaded and archived. For me, I feel like I got into the artistic part of my business from photography first.”

From the NFL to Self-Discovery

Brian’s transition into art was shaped by a moment that forced everything to shift.

“I had to regroup, get grounded and find myself. I had become real money hungry with football. I was thirsty for the lifestyle and it was then all taken away from me due to a career ending injury. That got me thinking about what’s really important.”

The sudden end of a professional career brings a level of clarity that is hard to replicate.

“With professional sports, you have to be all in and fully committed. When you’re suddenly out of a career, it’s life changing.”

In that space, Brian returned to something that had always been there.

Art became grounding. It became direction.

A Mirror of Experience, Identity, and Emotion

Brian’s work sits at the intersection of personal narrative and cultural reflection.

“The paint brush is the physical vehicle that allows the viewer to have a visual look into my subconscious through the manifestation of my work.

The world has its paint on me and people like me. I want the world to have my paint on it.”

“My work is the juxtaposition between how I see the world and how the world sees me. I am a mirror. The reflection of everything I consume and everything that inspires me.”

His perspective is shaped by a multicultural upbringing and a deep awareness of how identity, perception, and lived experience influence one another.

Some have drawn comparisons to Basquiat, Picasso, Carmen Herrera, and Wilfredo Lam. But Brian is not trying to follow a lineage.

He is focused on expression. On interpretation. On creating work that sparks something real.

Art as a Shared Language

What makes Artful Minds compelling is not just the artists involved, but the environment being created around them.

By bringing together creatives, community members, and mental health advocates, the event becomes immersive. Participatory. Human.

Art becomes a shared language.

A way to connect without needing to explain everything. A way to process experiences that are often difficult to articulate.

And in that space, something shifts.

There is recognition. There is empathy. There is connection.

Why This Matters for Broward Right Now

Broward County is continuing to grow as a cultural hub, with more artists, more platforms, and more stories emerging every year.

Artful Minds represents a deeper layer of that growth.

It is not just about visibility. It is about intention.

It is about creating spaces where creativity and well-being intersect, where art is experienced, not just viewed.

And where the community is invited into something meaningful.
